A new East Cobb Library and millions in road improvements are on the line when Cobb County voters decide a $1.15 billion sales tax renewal next month. Residents can review the full project list at a public session Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the West Cobb Senior Center, 4915 Dallas Highway in Powder Springs.

The proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) would fund capital projects from January 2028 through December 2033. The one-cent tax is a renewal, not a new levy. The current SPLOST expires Dec. 31, 2027, and the replacement would begin collecting Jan. 1, 2028.

East Cobb projects on the list

The SPLOST project list includes a new 20,000-square-foot East Cobb Library building to replace the current leased space, according to the county's SPLOST brochure. Johnson Ferry Road corridor improvements are budgeted at $2.5 million. Lower Roswell Road at Old Papermill Road intersection improvements would receive $1.5 million.

The Board of Commissioners, chaired by Lisa Cupid, approved the project list at its April 28 meeting, according to the county's SPLOST information page.

Countywide spending

The largest single category in the project booklet is city SPLOST allocations at roughly $355.5 million. Transportation projects total about $309.2 million. Public services, covering libraries, parks, senior services and solid waste, account for about $144.8 million.

Cobb's combined sales tax rate stands at 6%, which the county says is tied for the lowest in the state.

How to weigh in

Cobb County Government said on X that attendees can review proposed projects, costs and locations and ask questions at Thursday's session.

Residents who cannot attend have one more chance. The last scheduled session is Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the David Hankerson Building, 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta. Questions can also go to [email protected].

The vote is Nov. 3.
