A 17-year-old on an electric scooter died Friday, Sept. 4, after colliding with a turning tractor-trailer at Cobb Parkway and Allgood Road, the Marietta Police Department said.
The crash happened just after 2 p.m. at the busy intersection in Marietta, a corridor familiar to East Cobb commuters. Police identified the victim as Daniel Jimenez Gutierrez, 17, of Marietta.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, citing the Marietta Police Department, a white 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped at a red light on southbound Cobb Parkway, waiting to turn right onto Allgood Road. Gutierrez was riding his e-scooter southbound along the far-right shoulder and split the lane to pass the stopped truck on its right side instead of stopping with traffic.
The traffic signal changed. The tractor-trailer began its right turn.
Gutierrez struck the side of the trailer and was knocked from the scooter, according to WSB-TV, which also cited the police department's account. He was caught under the trailer and sustained fatal injuries. He was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he died.
The Marietta Daily Journal also reported on the crash.
No charges or traffic citations have been filed against the truck driver. The Marietta Police Department said the crash remains under investigation as of Wednesday, Sept. 9. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that it remains unclear whether visibility or speed played a role.
The department has not released the truck driver's name or any statement from the driver. No witness accounts have surfaced publicly.
Gutierrez's death marks the latest fatal crash involving an e-scooter and a commercial vehicle on a high-traffic Cobb County road. Cobb Parkway, also known as U.S. Route 41, carries heavy truck and commuter traffic through Marietta and into unincorporated Cobb County.
