The MDE School on Johnson Ferry Road scheduled a ribbon-cutting Wednesday, Oct. 21, for a new playground at its East Cobb campus.

The private school, which serves more than 125 students with developmental differences, planned an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. with the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m., according to an announcement published by East Cobb News. The celebration was set to include displays from community groups and the school's partners.

The playground was made possible by donations from a wide range of supporters, though the school did not identify specific donors.

Founder and CEO Mindy Elkan, a speech pathologist who started the school, said the playground fills a specific need.

"The playground is so important for our kids for sensory experiences and social interactions," Elkan said. "It provides a location where they can get exercise and let off steam during a day of learning and growing."

MDE School, at 1517 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta, serves neurodiverse learners from preschool through young adulthood. Its K-8 program is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission Inc., according to the school's website.
