Charlie Duncan, the lifelong Cobb County resident whom the Board of Commissioners honored in May as Georgia's oldest living World War II veteran, died Friday, July 31. He was 107.

Duncan's funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Sandy Plains Baptist Church, 2825 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta, with a visitation beginning at noon. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Kennesaw Memorial Park.

Born May 27, 1919, Duncan grew up in Cherokee and Cobb counties and attended what was then the Seventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School, now McEachern High School. He was sworn into the U.S. Army on his 25th birthday in 1944 and served 18 months with the Army Corps of Engineers in France, Belgium, and Germany, building prefabricated bridges and delivering them to the front lines. He returned home shortly after the German surrender in May 1945.

Back in Cobb County, Duncan spent decades as a master craftsman at Randall Brothers Millworks in Atlanta, retiring after 34 years. He also owned a grocery store and built his own home on Ebenezer Road in northeast Cobb.

The Cobb Board of Commissioners designated May 27, 2026, as "Charlie Duncan Day" during its May 26 meeting, marking his 107th birthday with a proclamation. The board had also honored him with a standing ovation and proclamation at his 106th birthday in 2025. In July 2023, Duncan served as grand marshal of the Marietta "Let Freedom Ring" parade.

Duncan credited his longevity to staying active and eating healthy, according to the county proclamation. He square-danced for 37 years and took water aerobics classes at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. He regularly dined with fellow veterans at a Woodstock restaurant near his senior-living facility, East Cobb News reported.

He was married to Geneva "Tennie" McDaniel for 39 years until her death, and later to Mary Vaughan for 44 years until her death. He was preceded in death by his daughter Ellen Duncan. He is survived by his daughter Selena Duncan Hill, stepchildren Beverly Vaughan Swancy, Connie Vaughn Albigese, and Doug Vaughan, 10 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Duncan was a longtime member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial donations to the church's Building and Grounds fund or to Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.
