Two contested local races affecting East Cobb and a sales-tax renewal projected to raise $1.15 billion are on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must use their assigned Election Day precinct and bring an accepted photo ID. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. may vote.
The commission and school-board races available to each voter depend on district boundaries. Residents can check their polling place and individual ballot through Georgia’s My Voter Page.
More than 235,000 Cobb residents participated in early voting, representing roughly 40% of registered voters and setting a county midterm record, East Cobb News reported.
Republican Commissioner JoAnn Birrell is seeking a fifth term in District 3, which covers most of East Cobb. Her Democratic challenger, Kevin Redmon, works in IT sales and management.
Birrell has emphasized public safety, fiscal restraint and completing projects she has championed. Redmon has called for stronger communication with constituents and greater transparency, according to East Cobb News’ profiles of Birrell and Redmon.
Democrats currently hold a 3-2 commission majority. A Redmon victory would expand that advantage to 4-1.
The school-board contest could change party control. Three-term Republican incumbent David Chastain faces Democrat Micheal Garza in Post 4, which includes much of the Sprayberry, Kell and Lassiter attendance zones.
Chastain, the board’s vice chairman, has campaigned on stability and continued support for district leadership. Garza, a web developer and PTA volunteer, argues the district needs a change in direction, according to their candidate profiles.
Republicans hold a 4-3 school-board majority. A Garza win would give Democrats control.
All Cobb voters will also consider renewing the county’s existing 1% SPLOST. The proposal would raise an estimated $1.15 billion over up to six years for county and municipal projects, according to the ballot language. Collections would begin in 2028, after the current tax expires.
The county’s project list includes $20 million for a new East Cobb Library. The proposed 28,000-square-foot facility would replace the approximately 17,000-square-foot leased branch at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center.
The project booklet includes property acquisition and construction. A location has not been publicly identified.
