Pope High School's girls track team and Walton High School's girls tennis team earned formal recognition from the Cobb County Board of Education for their 2025-2026 state championships.

The board honored both East Cobb programs at its Aug. 20 meeting, according to minutes included in the Sept. 17 agenda packet. Those minutes are scheduled for formal approval at Thursday, Sept. 17's board meeting, which begins with a 2 p.m. work session and a 7 p.m. voting session at 514 Glover St. in Marietta.

Pope won the GHSA Class 5A Girls Track overall state title. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Pope's 4x800-meter relay team of Phoebe Throckmorton, Simi Lawani, Josie Hutchinson and Aislynn Dunn set a state record at the meet. Dunn also won the individual Class 5A 800-meter run title.

Walton's girls tennis team captured the GHSA Class 6A state championship. It was the 24th state tennis title in program history. Walton's Ayla Inan was also recognized as the Class 6A girls discus state champion.

All seven board members were present for the Aug. 20 recognitions, with Board Chair Scamihorn presiding.

Beyond approving the August minutes, the board faces a full agenda on Sept. 17. Nine action items include contracts for Campbell High School grandstand refurbishment and Kennesaw Mountain High School renovations. The board will also vote on a resolution certifying the district's FY2028 Georgia State Capital Outlay Project application.

A superintendent's report on school safety is listed for potential action, along with a Local Board Governance Training Plan item. The Sept. 17 voting session will also recognize three students from the 2026 School of Beat State Music Technology Competition: Lauryn Willie of South Cobb High School for multimedia film scoring, Julia Wasserman of Campbell High School for vocal performance and Owen Denoziere of Campbell High School for world cup theme.

All attendees at the Sept. 17 meeting will pass through the district's Evolv security screening system upon entry, according to the district's public comment sign-up page. The board's next meeting after Sept. 17 is scheduled for Oct. 15.
