State Rep. Sharon Cooper holds a roughly 3-to-1 cash advantage over Democratic challenger Michelle Schreiner heading into the Nov. 3 general election for Georgia House District 45, state campaign finance records show.

Cooper, a Republican who chairs the House Committee on Public and Community Health, reported $165,398 in cash on hand through the end of July. Schreiner, a psychologist running for the East Cobb seat, reported $54,168, according to records first reported by the Marietta Daily Journal.

Over the full election cycle, Cooper has logged about $421,000 in contributions, including in-kind donations. Schreiner has logged about $61,000. Neither campaign took out loans.

Healthcare political action committees account for a significant share of Cooper's recent fundraising. During the most recent filing period, which ran from early May through the end of July, Cooper raised $34,850.

That included $3,300 from the Southeast Permanente Medical Group State Healthcare Political Action Committee, affiliated with Kaiser Permanente, and $3,300 from the Georgia Medical Political Action Committee, affiliated with the Medical Association of Georgia. The Georgia Medical Eye Political Action Committee, tied to the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, gave $500.

Cooper, a former registered nurse, said the donations reflect support for her work.

"People give you money because they like the work that you have done and they support you," Cooper told the Marietta Daily Journal on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Schreiner's recent donors included EMILY's List, a political action committee that backs Democratic women candidates, which gave $3,300. She also received $500 from the campaign of state Rep. Lisa Campbell, D-Kennesaw, $250 from former state Rep. Bee Nguyen, and $250 from Kevin Redmon, a Democrat challenging District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

Cooper's campaign spent $73,456 through July. Her recent expenses included $9,000 to Right Path Strategic Affairs, an Atlanta-based political consulting firm, and $1,247 in storage fees to Capitol Response LLC, a compliance firm. Schreiner's campaign spent $3,307 over the same period, including $750 to political consultant Shannon Marietta-Stripling and about $208 to ActBlue for credit card processing fees.

Cooper entered the cycle with $80,380 in cash carried over from previous campaigns.

Schreiner called House District 45 one of the six most competitive districts in Georgia in a written message to the Marietta Daily Journal.
