Calvin Coffey faces three charges under Georgia's Family Violence Act after Kennesaw Police say he beat a woman with whom he shares a child and used a frying pan to destroy her car on July 15.
Coffey remains in the Cobb County jail on charges of battery with visible harm, criminal damage to property and obstruction of law enforcement, according to a WSB-TV report citing Kennesaw Police Department records and Cobb County court filings.
What police say happened
The incident began with a $300 bet at a child's birthday party at a bowling alley, according to police. Coffey lost the bet after failing to make a strike, and the dispute escalated once the pair returned home.
The woman told Coffey she could take care of herself, and he became upset, police said. Still arguing over the money, Coffey gave the pair's son $1,000 instead of the owed $300, according to the police account. The argument continued until it turned physical.
Police said Coffey pushed the woman into her bedroom, locked the door, climbed on top of her and repeatedly punched her in the face. Responding officers observed multiple marks on her face, disheveled hair and a swollen eye.
Two children were present at the home when officers arrived.
Frying pan used to smash car
After the assault, the woman fled to a gas station and picked up another of her sons before dropping him at a friend's house and returning home, according to police. She found Coffey smashing her Chevrolet Malibu with a frying pan.
Officers found the Malibu's windows smashed and both side mirrors damaged. They recovered "a broken frying pan on the ground next to the Malibu and one in the driver's seat inside the vehicle," according to the police account. Police estimated the damage exceeded $7,000.
The woman drove the damaged car away from the home and flagged down officers she spotted in the neighborhood.
Arrest required Taser
When police located Coffey wandering the street, he resisted detention repeatedly. He told officers they should "talk to him like a man," according to police. Officers deployed a Taser to subdue him.
While being transported to a patrol car, Coffey was "continuously kicking and bashing" the side of the police vehicle, officers reported, though no visible damage resulted.
What's next
Coffey remained in the Cobb County jail as of Wednesday, July 22. No court date or bond hearing has been publicly announced.
