Cobb County residents looking for peer mental health support have a new option, and its next special event is open to the community.
The NAMI Cobb Mental Health Drop-In Center will host a "Lifeline Strengths" guided writing activity on Wednesday, July 29, at 2 p.m. Led by facilitator Patty, the session asks participants to map their mental health journey on paper, identify key life experiences, and recognize personal strengths that have supported their recovery, according to a NAMI Cobb announcement published July 20.
The drop-in center opened June 25 at First Presbyterian Church, 189 Church St., Marietta. It is the organization's first physical peer-support space in Cobb County.
The Cobb County District Attorney's Office attended the ribbon-cutting and, in a July 10 Facebook post, called the center "a valuable community resource" and recognized NAMI Cobb's work to reduce stigma and expand access to mental health support countywide.
Who can attend
The center is open to adults 18 and older who live with mental health conditions, along with their families, friends, and loved ones, according to NAMI Cobb's website. It operates Tuesday through Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m.
A NAMI Cobb membership is required for insurance purposes. Membership starts at $5 per year, and the organization says financial assistance is available for anyone who needs it.
What happens on a regular day
Outside special events like the July 29 writing session, the center's daily schedule includes a Care & Share Peer Support Group from 1:30 to 2 p.m., followed by adult coloring, puzzles, and board games from 2 to 3:45 p.m., and guided meditation from 3:45 to 4 p.m. NAMI Cobb describes the space as a supplement to therapy and doctor visits, not a replacement.
