A 50-year-old Northeast Cobb man has been held without bond since July 16 after police say he brandished a 9 mm handgun at two people during a road-rage encounter on Canton Road.

John Michael Wier Sr., of a Lakewood Drive address, faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and reckless conduct, according to an arrest warrant.

The warrant states Wier was driving a black 2003 Dodge Durango on July 15 near the Chevron station at 3349 Canton Road when he stopped beside another vehicle and yelled obscenities at the two occupants. When the light turned green, Wier pulled ahead and pointed the handgun at both victims out of the driver's side window with his right hand, the warrant states.

Officers who arrived at Wier's home shortly after the incident also found a sawed-off rifle that did not have a required tax stamp from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the warrant. The charges listed are from the state arrest warrant; it is unclear whether federal charges related to the rifle are pending.

Church vandalism causes thousands in damage

Separately, Unity North Atlanta Church at 4255 Sandy Plains Road reported that vandals broke several glass doors and windows, causing what the church called "thousands of dollars in property damage."

Anthony Jayesingha, the church's executive director, told East Cobb News on July 20 that two police reports have been filed and the church is still assessing the full extent of the damage.

"We have one family that has owned up so far," Jayesingha said after the story was initially published.

A short surveillance video captured at least two young suspects, one covering his face and throwing something while both looked up at the camera. The church has not specified the exact date of the vandalism.
