Sunday dining in East Cobb is about to get more options. Righteous 'Que, the barbecue spot at Piedmont Commons that has been dark on Sundays for more than a decade, launches Sunday lunch service on July 26, and two breakfast restaurants have cleared a county licensing hurdle to start pouring mimosas.

Righteous 'Que adds Sunday hours

Founder Patrick Verzone opened Righteous 'Que at 1050 East Piedmont Road in 2012 after years of backyard cookouts for friends, family, and church members. The restaurant later moved into a larger space within the same shopping center. Its former unit is now home to Belen de la Cruz Empanadas and Pastries.

Starting Sunday, July 26, Righteous 'Que will serve lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Sunday, according to the restaurant's Facebook page. In a video posted the week of July 20, Verzone said the kitchen plans to expand the menu, too: "As we get closer to football season, we'll be throwing in some wings."

Mimosas cleared for Eggs Up Grill and J. Christopher's

Two East Cobb breakfast spots won county approval to serve beer, wine, and Sunday alcohol after navigating a multi-step licensing process.

Eggs Up Grill at 4401 Shallowford Road and J. Christopher's at the Woodlawn Square Shopping Center on Johnson Ferry Road both received initial denials from the Cobb Business License Division because each location sits within 300 feet of residences, triggering a county distance ordinance. Both appealed.

The Cobb License Review Board approved the requests, and the Cobb Board of Commissioners upheld those approvals by consent, according to East Cobb News reporting published Monday, July 20.

The county process requires applicants near sensitive uses to complete a 36-question questionnaire addressing potential effects on nearby homes, schools, parks, and places of worship. The form also covers employee training plans and the percentage breakdown between food and alcohol sales. According to the Cobb County government website, the full review takes 12 to 16 weeks.

Eggs Up Grill's ownership told the county the mimosa requirement came from the corporate franchisor. The Shallowford Road location will begin serving mimosas after a remodeling project that will keep the restaurant closed for at least another week beyond July 20. No specific reopening date has been announced.

J. Christopher's, which serves daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., has not announced a start date for its new drink menu.
