Wheeler High School's marching band spent the week rehearsing at East Cobb Middle School on Terrell Mill Road instead of their own campus, after President Donald Trump's visit to the school forced a last-minute relocation of band camp.

Trump was scheduled to speak in Wildcat Arena, the Wheeler gymnasium, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, to promote Trump Accounts, a new federally sponsored investment program for children. The visit came less than two weeks before the Cobb County School District's 2026-27 school year begins Monday, August 3.

Yellow security fencing lined the campus fronts of both Wheeler High and Eastvalley Elementary School across the street. A Cobb County School District police car patrolled Holt Road between the two school entrances on Tuesday, July 21. In the Wheeler bus lane, a row of portable toilets was set up and a food truck parked near the entrance. Verizon equipment was being unloaded in the Eastvalley parking lot for television crews.

Road closures in the area began at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, with on-site parking opening around 8:30 a.m.

The Wheeler band's Facebook page thanked "our Booster Board and the parent and community volunteers who moved instruments and equipment, set up scaffolding so our directors could see the drill, and lined the field for marching rehearsal" at the temporary site.

What brought Trump to Wheeler

Trump chose Wheeler to promote Trump Accounts, formally known as 530A accounts. These are tax-advantaged investment accounts for U.S. children under 18, enacted through the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" and launched July 4, 2026. Children born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible for a one-time $1,000 deposit from the U.S. Treasury; children born between 2016 and 2024 may receive $250 if they live in a ZIP code where median household income is $150,000 or less. Parents can open accounts at TrumpAccounts.gov.

Board member weighs in

Cobb Board of Education vice chair John Cristadoro, who represents the Wheeler, Walton, and Pope High School attendance zones, posted on Facebook on July 16 when the visit was announced: "Regardless of which side of the aisle you're on, it's a big deal to have a sitting president choose our school for this."

Cristadoro, a business owner and youth coach who took office in January 2025, represents the Post 5 district covering all three East Cobb comprehensive high schools.

The Cobb County School District serves 105,738 students across 112 schools and ranked No. 1 in Metro Atlanta on the 2024-25 Georgia Milestones assessment in five tested subjects, according to district data. The district referred all questions about how the visit was arranged to the White House.

What's next for families

Teachers and staff had not yet reported to campuses as of Tuesday, July 21. The first day of school is Monday, August 3.

Trump is the third president or presidential candidate to visit a Cobb County school campus, following George W. Bush at Harrison High School and Barack Obama at McEachern High School.
