Walton travels to No. 4 North Gwinnett on Friday, Sept. 4, for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff that marks the Raiders' stiffest challenge of the young season.

The Bulldogs are 2-0. They opened 2026 with a 37-22 win over Grayson and followed it with a 40-0 shutout of Collins Hill, outscoring opponents 77-22 through two games, according to On3's Georgia rankings. North Gwinnett sits at No. 4 in both the On3 and Sports Illustrated state polls.

Walton head coach Daniel Brunner told the Marietta Daily Journal that his program's road résumé gives the Raiders a blueprint for Friday night. In 2021, Walton reached the Class AAAAAAA semifinals with three consecutive playoff road wins. In 2022, the Raiders went into Tom Riden Stadium and beat No. 1 Buford in the second round. In 2025, after a 50-17 loss to McEachern in the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic, Walton drew the No. 4 Indians again in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs and pulled off a 28-24 upset on the road.

Brunner said he hopes that experience pays dividends, but acknowledged it is hard to simulate a hostile road environment during the week. He said the coaching staff has focused on situational preparation, talking players through the game scenarios they are likely to face.

The Raiders enter at 1-1 after falling to Roswell in the Corky Kell-Dave Hunter Classic and bouncing back with a 42-7 win over North Clayton on Aug. 28. Junior quarterback Christion Peacock connected with his brother, sophomore receiver Jordan Peacock, for a 32-yard touchdown in that game. Junior wide receiver Aiden Opore tallied a game-high 158 receiving yards.

Brunner said the offense still has room to grow, particularly on the ground. He told the MDJ the Raiders cannot rush for fewer than 100 yards, as they did against North Clayton, and expect to win against a defense this talented.

North Gwinnett's defense features Cincinnati commit Joshua Jones at defensive tackle, North Carolina State commit Jake Godfree at linebacker and South Alabama commit Christian Jackson at cornerback. The Bulldogs also present a wrinkle on offense with a two-quarterback system pairing left-handed senior Elam Rahman and right-handed junior Banks Halcomb.

Walton's roster skews young this season, with a smaller senior class and several sophomores and juniors filling key roles on both sides of the ball. Brunner said the message to those younger players is direct.

"Get lined up, get our eyes in the right place, and let's go play fast and physical football and see what we can go do," Brunner told the MDJ.
