Five hospitalized after speedboat crash on Lake Allatoona

Five people were ejected from a speedboat and hospitalized with serious injuries after the vessel struck the shoreline of Lake Allatoona on Sunday, Aug. 9, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR's Law Enforcement Division said game wardens were notified of the crash at 11:06 a.m. The large speedboat was participating in a poker run event in Bartow County when it hit the shore at a high rate of speed, WRGA News reported, citing the DNR.

All five occupants were thrown from the boat on impact. EMS crews transported them to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, the region's primary trauma center and the hospital most East Cobb residents know as their emergency facility.

What investigators have not confirmed

The DNR did not release the names, ages or genders of the five people hospitalized. Authorities also did not disclose the exact location of the crash on the lake or the current conditions of the victims, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

The cause remains unknown.

The DNR's Critical Incident Reconstruction Team, which handles the agency's most serious boating and waterway incidents, is leading the investigation. The agency said additional information will be available once the probe is completed in several weeks.

Boating safety context

Lake Allatoona, roughly 30 miles north of Marietta, is one of the most popular summer boating destinations for East Cobb families.

As of early July, the Georgia DNR had recorded four boating fatalities and 33 water-related deaths statewide for 2026, according to CBS News Atlanta. During the Fourth of July holiday weekend alone, game wardens charged 34 people with boating under the influence.
