Cobb issues 270,574 property tax bills totaling $1.36 billion, due Oct. 15

East Cobb homeowners should check their mailboxes: Cobb County has issued 270,574 property tax bills totaling more than $1.36 billion, with payment due Oct. 15.

Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson announced Tuesday, Aug. 18, that the bills went out after the Georgia Department of Revenue approved the county's tax digest. The total includes 256,894 real property bills worth $1.27 billion and 13,680 personal property bills worth nearly $95 million.

Bills must be received by the Tax Commissioner's Office or postmarked by Oct. 15 to avoid penalties.

State grant may lower your bill

Qualifying homeowners will see a new line item: the Homeowner Tax Relief Grant. The state program, funded at $850 million statewide in the Amended Fiscal Year 2026 budget signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on March 3, is estimated to reduce homesteaded property taxes by a statewide average of $500, according to the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute.

The HTRG applies only to homesteaded properties. Investment properties, vacation homes and other non-primary residences do not qualify. The reduction appears automatically on eligible bills and is separate from other homestead exemptions.

Jackson said her office aims to ensure taxpayers have the information and convenient payment options they need to understand their bills.

Check your exemptions

Jackson's office also warned that property owners receiving a homestead exemption for which they are no longer eligible must notify the Tax Commissioner's Office. Those who fail to report could face a penalty. Homeowners can verify their exemptions at cobbtax.gov.

The Tax Commissioner's Office bills and collects taxes for both the Cobb County Board of Commissioners and the Cobb County School District. The county's seven cities bill and collect their own property taxes separately.
