Martin Floyd, 42, died at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital early Tuesday, Oct. 6, hours after fellow detainees at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center alerted deputies that he was experiencing a medical emergency.

Floyd is the second detainee to die at the Cobb jail under medical circumstances since July, East Cobb News reported.

Cobb County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Hassan Glenn said Floyd was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. WSB-TV reported the time of death as 12:26 a.m.

Floyd had been held at the detention center since June 2025. Glenn said medical staff evaluated Floyd on Monday, Oct. 5, and found his vitals to be within normal range. Late that night, other detainees flagged that Floyd was in distress. Detention center medical staff and first responders attempted to resuscitate him before he was transported to Kennestone Hospital.

The specific medical condition was not disclosed.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was notified of Floyd's death and declined to investigate, according to Glenn. The Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Unit will handle the case, which Glenn described as standard procedure for all in-custody deaths. The Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

11Alive reported that no records in the Cobb detention center or Superior Court portals indicate why Floyd was being held.

Floyd's death follows that of Robert Hardy, who died in July after being found in cardiac arrest at the same facility. Hardy had been booked June 11 on charges including first-degree arson. Deputies found him in cardiac arrest on July 24, and he was placed on a ventilator at Kennestone Hospital. His family chose to end his care after doctors determined there was no viable path to recovery, according to East Cobb News. Following Hardy's death, the Sheriff's Office said in July it was conducting an internal review to confirm all protocols were followed, as 11Alive reported.

The outcome of that review has not been made public.

Glenn said Floyd's family has been notified. No timeline has been announced for the Criminal Investigations Unit's findings or the autopsy results.
