A 13-year-old Woodstock volleyball player diagnosed with leukemia after a Valentine's Day weekend tournament will be the beneficiary of Kennesaw State's 11th annual Griffin's Game on Friday, Sept. 4.

Aliz Torres, a seventh grader who played on the Junior Knights River Ridge volleyball team, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February after a hard fall during a tournament left an unusually dark bruise that wouldn't heal. Fatigue, bleeding gums, weight loss and painful mouth sores followed. Doctors at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta found her blood counts dangerously low and diagnosed the high-risk form of leukemia that same day, according to KSU Athletics.

In July, Aliz underwent a bone marrow transplant. Her 3-year-old brother was a perfect donor match. Both parents stepped away from work during the critical month surrounding the procedure, and the family has since moved into the Ronald McDonald House.

The KSU Owls will host West Georgia in their home opener at VyStar Arena in Kennesaw, with all ticket proceeds going directly to Aliz and her family. Tickets are $13 each, the same number as Aliz's age. A ticket-and-T-shirt combo runs $28; shirts alone cost $20.75 online or at the match. Sponsors include A5 Volleyball, which operates clubs throughout metro Atlanta including East Cobb, along with Atlanta Vibe, Rally Volleyball, CURE Childhood Cancer and others.

Griffin's Game began in 2015 after head coach Keith Schunzel and his wife Briana's son, Griffin, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Griffin is now in remission. Each season the program selects a family to support, and the event has raised more than $130,000 over the past decade for families fighting childhood cancer.

Beyond volleyball, Aliz plays electric guitar and listens to Deftones, Frank Sinatra and Tyler, the Creator. Before her diagnosis she spent her weekdays at school and her weekends competing with teammates in Woodstock.

KSU Athletics asked the community to support the Torres family, saying every ticket and T-shirt purchase helps them focus on Aliz's recovery. East Cobb families connected to youth volleyball through clubs like A5 have a direct link to the cause.
