Kennesaw State women's soccer faces its toughest possible opener Wednesday night, traveling to No. 21 Memphis for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex.

The matchup favors Memphis on paper. The Tigers are riding a 40-match unbeaten streak at home dating to October 2021 and were the unanimous pick to win the American Conference in the preseason coaches' poll. Memphis posted a 17-1-3 record last season, climbing as high as No. 3 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches rankings.

The series history is lopsided: Memphis leads 2-0 all-time, including a 7-0 rout at Kennesaw in last year's season opener.

Still, head coach Chris Cahill's third-year squad looks different from the group that absorbed that loss. Ten players departed, and Cahill rebuilt with 17 underclassmen on a 26-player roster, including 10 incoming freshmen and a sophomore transfer. In a preseason scrimmage against defending ASUN champion Lipscomb, five of the 11 starters were underclassmen, and the entire starting forward line of freshmen Julia Balchen, Melissa Mert and sophomore Caroline Shaw is new.

The experience anchors sit in the back. Defensive midfielder Sydni Whitehead, a Bellarmine transfer who started every match last season and logged 1,350 minutes (second on the team), returns as the on-field leader. She has started all 55 career matches she's appeared in across two programs and earned Conference USA All-Academic honors in 2025.

Junior outside back Delaney Edwards played every match last season, starting 16, and was named a CUSA Breakout Candidate by TopDrawerSoccer entering 2026, according to the KSU athletics preview. She logged 1,270 minutes and went the full 90 in four straight conference games down the stretch.

Between the posts, fifth-year goalkeeper Charlee Bernal brings 32 career appearances and 139 saves, both among the top seven in program history. She'll compete for minutes with Sara Hill, who finished third among CUSA goalkeepers in save percentage (.816) and fifth in goals-against average (1.12) across eight starts last season.

Cahill has also leaned into international recruiting. Balchen was the first Canadian he brought to Kennesaw; four more Canadians joined this fall from British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Quebec. Freshmen Natalie Bruno and Sian Kellier were born in the U.S. but have represented the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, respectively, at the international level.

Cahill enters the match with a 5-21-8 career record at KSU, per Memphis Athletics. The program went 3-10-4 overall in its inaugural CUSA season in 2024, and Cahill's career mark reflects another modest campaign in 2025 before this offseason's roster overhaul.
