A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday, July 25, after separating from his bike on Barrett Parkway near Anderson Estates Court in East Cobb, according to a Cobb County Courier report published Tuesday, July 28.
The crash happened at approximately 1:20 p.m. Both the 2005 Honda motorcycle and a blue 2009 Toyota Corolla were traveling northbound on Barrett Parkway when the rider separated from the motorcycle, Cobb County Police said. The riderless bike continued north and struck the passenger side of the Corolla.
The motorcyclist was thrown onto the shoulder of Barrett Parkway near Anderson Estates Court and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Corolla's driver was not hurt.
As we reported earlier Tuesday, July 28, police initially released few details about the crash. The Courier report, citing authorities, provided the first public account of how the collision unfolded.
STEP Unit investigating
The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit is handling the investigation. The unit is commanded by Lt. Lane Johnson.
The STEP Unit investigates all fatal traffic crashes and enforces traffic laws in areas where data shows elevated crash rates, according to a department description cited by the Courier. The unit also administers the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program and participates in special security details.
Police have not released the motorcyclist's name or an update on his condition since the crash. The cause of the rider's separation from the motorcycle has not been disclosed.
No charges have been announced.
