Wheeler High School's Air Force JROTC Raider team won four of five events to capture the Mixed Division title at the second annual Wildcat Raider Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The tournament, hosted on Wheeler's campus, drew 22 Raider teams from 12 high schools, according to the Cobb County School District. The field included 10 male teams, three female teams and nine mixed teams competing across three divisions.

Squads faced five events: Team Run, Rope Bridge, Physical Team Test, Tire Flip and Rescue Rodeo. Wheeler's Mixed squad won every event except one to claim the division championship.

The Wheeler Boys team posted strong results as well, finishing second in both the Rope Bridge and Rescue Rodeo events and placing fourth overall in the Boys Division.

The result stands out because Wheeler runs the only Air Force JROTC Raider program in Cobb County. The sport is traditionally dominated by Army JROTC programs, making the Wildcats' first-place finish against that competition all the more notable.

Wheeler's Raider program also operates through a crosstown partnership with Walton High School. Cadets from both East Cobb schools train and compete together as a single Raider team, combining rosters across campus lines.

Raider teams face obstacle courses, rescue scenarios, rope bridges, timed runs and tire flips in head-to-head competition. The sport has been compared to a team version of "American Ninja Warrior," as reported by East Cobb News.

Wheeler Principal Sara Fetterman said she was proud of both squads and the school's ability to host the event. "I love that we are getting the message out about our program's success," she said. Fetterman's Instagram video of the Rope Bridge event drew hundreds of thousands of views, according to the district.

Fetterman called the weekend "amazing" and praised the two teams' performance and the quality of the event Wheeler hosted.

The Wildcat Raider teams travel to Etowah High School on Saturday, Sept. 5, for their next competition as they continue their third season of Raider competition.
