A 51-year-old man is facing two counts of aggravated assault after allegedly pointing a handgun at multiple East Cobb drivers during a series of road rage incidents on Sunday, Aug. 23. The encounters began before 5 a.m. in the East Cobb area, according to Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith. A man driving a black GMC pickup truck followed people and pointed a gun outside his vehicle's window, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

One delivery driver told police the truck followed him into a cul-de-sac while he was dropping off a package, blocked his vehicle and aimed a gun at him. Less than 15 minutes later, a woman reported the same truck followed her along Woodlawn Drive onto Johnson Ferry Road. She pulled into a Walmart parking lot to escape, according to police.

Investigators spent the day gathering Ring doorbell footage and vehicle descriptions from the neighborhood. They located the truck and arrested James Cooper, 51, at his home around 11 p.m. that Sunday, where officers found cocaine and a pipe in the truck, according to WSB-TV and East Cobb News, both of which cited the arrest warrant.

Authorities charged Cooper with two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and cocaine possession. He is being held without bond, according to both outlets. No attorney for Cooper has been identified in public records, and no response on his behalf appears in available reports.

Police have not confirmed what motivated the incidents. Investigators believe additional victims may have been targeted during the early morning hours, and some may not yet realize they were followed.

East Cobb resident Chandler Aliffi told Fox 5 Atlanta reporter Denise Dillon the spree left neighbors on edge. "Definitely makes you want to be more aware of your surroundings," Aliffi said. "Thank goodness for Ring doorbells in our cul-de-sac that helped get the guy." Aliffi also said it was unsettling to think someone would drive through the area threatening people at that hour.

No independent Cobb County Police Department press release or social media post about the arrest has been published as of Saturday, Aug. 29. Sgt. Smith is the only named department source in available reporting.
